This project simulates a complete SEO revamp for a local fitness studio website, FitZone Fitness Hub, with the goal of improving organic visibility, local rankings, and lead generation from search engines.
The objective was to move the website from being practically invisible on Google for local fitness-related keywords to ranking on the first page for high-intent local queries, while also improving user experience, page performance, and conversion potential.
As an SEO Strategist & Implementation Lead, I was responsible for:
Performing a full SEO audit (technical, on-page, off-page, and local SEO)
Conducting keyword research and mapping keywords to pages
Planning and implementing on-page SEO improvements
Identifying and fixing technical SEO issues
Designing an off-page & backlink strategy based on DA/PA
Monitoring Core Web Vitals and site performance
Creating a reporting framework to track rankings, traffic, and leads
FitZone Fitness Hub is a local fitness studio offering:
Gym memberships
Group classes
Personal training
Weight-loss programs
Despite having a functional website, the studio was not getting meaningful inquiries from organic traffic. Most leads came from word-of-mouth and offline marketing. The site:
Didn’t rank for important local queries like “gym near me”, “fitness studio in [city]”, or “personal trainer [city]”
Had slow load times and poor mobile performance
Lacked structured content, optimized meta tags, and local SEO focus
From the initial audit, I identified key issues:
On-Page SEO Gaps
Technical SEO Issues
Core Web Vitals Concerns
Off-Page & Authority Weakness
Local SEO Weakness
Used tools such as Google Search Console, Google Analytics, PageSpeed Insights, and a third-party SEO tool (like Ahrefs/Moz/SEMrush in simulation) for:
Baseline organic traffic
Current keyword rankings
Crawl errors and indexation issues
Existing backlinks and domain authority
Established baseline metrics (simulated):
Monthly Organic Traffic: ~120 visits
Ranking Keywords on Page 1: 2 (low-volume brand terms)
Leads from Organic per month: 3–5
a) Keyword Research & Mapping
Identified primary keywords:
gym near me, fitness studio in Hubli, best gym in Hubli
personal trainer hubli, weight loss program Hubli
Mapped keywords to specific pages (one primary keyword + few secondary keywords per page).
b) Meta Titles & Descriptions
Wrote SEO-focused, click-worthy titles and descriptions.
Example Title:
“Best Gym in Hubli | FitZone Fitness Hub – Memberships & Personal Training”
Example Description:
“Join FitZone Fitness Hub, the best gym in Hubli offering flexible memberships, certified trainers, and group classes. Book a free trial today.”
c) Header Structure (H1, H2, H3)
Ensured each page had a single H1 featuring the main keyword.
Added H2s for sections like Services, Benefits, Pricing, FAQs.
d) Content Optimization
Rewrote homepage and service pages with:
Clear value propositions
Location-based keywords
Benefits-focused content (not just features)
Calls to action (e.g., “Book Free Trial”, “Call Now”)
e) Image Optimization
Added keyword-relevant alt text to images.
Compressed images using WebP/JPEG formats.
f) Internal Linking
Linked related pages:
Homepage → Membership Plans → Personal Training → Contact
Used descriptive anchor texts like “personal training in Hubli” instead of “click here.”
a) Backlink Prospecting (Quality over Quantity)
Identified relevant websites with good Domain Authority (DA) and Page Authority (PA) using tools like Moz (simulated).
Targeted:
Local blogs
Health, wellness & fitness blogs
Local news & community portals
Business directories with high DA
b) Types of Backlinks Built
Local Citations: Listed FitZone on high DA directories (Justdial, Sulekha, Google Maps, etc.) with consistent NAP.
Guest Posts: Created fitness-related blogs (e.g., “5 Benefits of Strength Training”) and pitched them to local and niche blogs.
Resource Links: Contacted websites with “Best gyms in [city]” or “Fitness resources” to list FitZone.
Social Profiles: Brand profiles on social platforms linked back to the website.
c) Evaluation Based on DA & PA
Prioritized backlinks from sites with:
DA 30+ and relevant niche
Clean backlink profile (no spam)
Actual traffic (not just metric-based)
Tracked:
Number of referring domains
Growth in DA over time
Traffic from referral sources
a) Site Speed Optimization
Minified CSS and JS where possible.
Enabled browser caching and gzip compression.
Compressed large hero images.
b) Mobile Optimization
Ensured fully responsive design.
Fixed tap-target spacing and font sizing issues.
c) URL & Structure Improvements
Cleaned URLs:
/services/personal-training instead of /page-id=123?service=pt
Created an XML Sitemap and submitted to Google Search Console.
Checked and fixed any 404 errors and redirect chains.
d) Indexing & Crawlability
Used robots.txt to avoid blocking important pages.
Ensured only relevant pages were indexed (no thin or duplicate content).
Optimized Google Business Profile:
Updated description, categories, and services
Added photos of gym, trainers, facilities
Encouraged customer reviews with city + service keywords
Ensured consistent NAP across:
Website
Directories
Social media
Embedded Google Map on the Contact/Location page.
Used Google PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse to measure:
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) – optimized by:
Compressing hero images
Preloading key resources
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) – improved by:
Setting image dimensions
Avoiding content shifting due to ads/elements loading late
Interaction to Next Paint (INP) (replacing FID) – improved by:
Reducing heavy JavaScript
Deferring non-critical scripts
Simulated improvements:
LCP improved from ~4.8s → ~2.7s
CLS reduced from 0.25 → 0.05
INP within good thresholds
Set up Goals/Events in Google Analytics (simulated):
Contact form submissions
Click-to-call actions
“Book Free Trial” clicks
Monitored:
Keyword rankings
Organic traffic trend
Leads from organic channel
